Watering
If
you have a large, well-stocked garden and want to ensure that
it is regularly watered, you could consider an automatic pumped
system. (Whilst there are small systems which will work very well
from an outside tap, if you have low water pressure or a big garden
the only way to do it properly is with a pump). Pumps can deliver
large flow-rates at good pressures therefore allowing the watering
of a large area in a limited amount of time. There are various
options open to you and it need not cost you a fortune. (Pump
& controllers start from around £250).
If
you are lucky enough to have a well or spring on your land, you
could use that. Most people however have to use a tank (100-150gallons)
which is filled with water and which feeds a pump sitting below
or next to or even inside it. The pump then sends the water under
pressure to your various watering devices. If connected via a
timer and automatic pump controller, it can water your garden
at night and even when you are on holiday so you need never come
home to a brown lawn and wilting or dead plants again !
There
are many different sorts of sprinklers available which are unobtrusive
and can water individual plants or shrubs, or hanging baskets,
or whole borders or your lawn. Some involve running a ring-main
buried under the topsoil around you garden and plugging in “micro
sprinklers”. You could consider pop-up sprinklers for a lawn area.
